Agricultural Biotechnology Support Project II

Harvesting The Benefits Of Agricultural Biotechnology Products In Bangaldesh

October 6 - 7, 2004
Venue: Grand Ballroom , Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel , Dhaka

Background and Goals
The National Committee on Biosafety in Bangladesh (NCBB) has drafted the country's first-ever National Biotechnology Policy. The draft policy calls for the increased use of biotechnology in agriculture and other fields, however there has so far been little private-sector biotechnology development in Bangladesh. The new draft policy, which would serve as a basis for a 20-year strategic government plan, aims to change that. One major factor is the encouragement of private sector involvement through such initiatives. The Agricultural Biotechnology Support Project II (ABSP II) is mandated by USAID to support the development of biotechnology through delivering bio-engineered products to the market place. This would also be greatly enhanced with the involvement of the private sector.

This workshop will address key areas related to the delivery of products from agricultural biotechnology, such as transparent biosafety regulations, improved public understanding of the potential of biotechnology and an understanding of the role of the private sector in marketing and delivery. The need for this workshop has been recognized by senior policy makers in the National Committee on Biosafety in Bangladesh (NCBB); Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council (BARC); Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI); USAID Bangladesh Mission, researchers currently involved with ABSP II projects in Bangladesh, private sector representatives and non-governmental organizations who are involved in the development work.

The specific goals of this workshop are to share knowledge in areas relating to:

  • Global trends & developments in agricultural biotechnology;
  • Technology access and transfer in relation to intellectual property rights;
  • Biosafety regulations and their implementation; and
  • Communicating the benefits and potential risks of biotechnology
Program Partners
The program will be conducted by ABSPII in partnership with Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC), the country’s apex body of National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS). In addition, Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), the country’s apex organization for trade and industry, will co-sponsor the program.
