About Biosafety
In an era of globalization characterized increasing demographies and insufficient resources, the need for better standards and practices in the areas of agriculture and health is of utmost importance.
To put the advancements of science to safe use, a greater awareness about standards, principles and procedures for biosafety gains much interest and significance. At this juncture, biosafety can be explained as a homogeneous concept of biological integrity expressing itself in multifarious disciplines like ecology, agriculture, medicine and chemistry etc. In the perspective of agriculture, the concept of mbiosafety involves assessing and monitoring the effects of possible gene flow, competitiveness and the effects on other organisms, as well as possible deleterious effects of the products on health of animals and humans. Biosafety is an essential parameter to be considered in relation to the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food and agriculture.
In this connection, an effective regulatory mechanism is necessary to evaluate the biosafety of transgenic products. With cutting edge technologies and scientific advancements evolving every day, there has been a significant synergy of research and development, establishment of global partnerships; international interfusions of biological material in transgenic product development leading to emphasis on best practices and standards in biosafety.
